Believe it or not, Twitter was founded in 2006, making it 16 years old.
Co-founder Jack Dorsey posted the first tweet on March 21 of that year, with the message “just setting up my twttr.”
The social media platform was originally going to be called “twttr,” but the founders ultimately decided to give Twitter its vowels back and capitalize the initial T.
When was Twitter founded? Who created it?
Along with Jack Dorsey, Evan Williams, Biz Stone, and Noah Glass co-founded Twitter.
The California-based business was established in March 2006 and officially launched in July of that same year, with things truly taking off in 2007 after that.
Dorsey, who is perhaps the platform’s most well-known founder, served as CEO from 2006 to 2008, then as Chairman from 2015 to 2015, before resuming his duties as CEO from 2015 to 2021.
Before Dick Costolo, who was Twitter’s Chief Technology Officer at the time, took over as CEO in 2015, fellow co-founder Williams served as CEO from 2008 to 2010.
In the meantime, Noah Glass launched the now-defunct podcasting firm Odeo, and Biz Stone also co-founded Medium.com.
