He began his journalism career in 1936 with the Saint John Citizen before switching to the Saint John Telegraph-Journal, Saint John Telegraph-Journal, and finally the Canadian Press in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

In 1940, Lynch was chosen to lead the British United Press’ Vancouver bureau. He was sent to Toronto the following year to take the post of divisional manager. Lynch began working for Reuters News Agency in 1943 as a correspondent for World War II. He was one of nine Canadian correspondents that arrived at Juno Beach with the troops on D-Day. Other contributors included CBC veteran correspondent Matthew Halton, Canadian Press reporters Ross Munro and William Stewart, The Globe and Mail’s Ralph Allen, and Radio-Marcel Canada’s Ouimet.

In his 1959 book The Longest Day, Cornelius Ryan mentions Lynch’s presence on Juno Beach. Lynch is cited in the book as having yelled at the homing pigeons that they were in danger when they flew towards the German lines “Traitors! Terrible traitors! “. Lynch’s character is fictionalized in the 1962 blockbuster movie adaptation of Ryan’s book. In order to take on the position of Ottawa Bureau Chief for Southam News, Lynch returned to Canada in 1958. In Ottawa, Lynch flourished as a journalist, and by 1960, he was Southam’s Chief. The question Lynch posed to the retiring NATO Supreme Commander on January 3, 1963, during a press conference in Ottawa, regarding Canada’s nuclear weapons policy, would ultimately lead to the fall of Prime Minister John Diefenbaker’s administration: “Does it mean, sir, that if Canada does not accept nuclear weapons for these aeroplanes [Canada’s Starfighter jets in Europe], that she is not actually fulfilling her NATO commitments?” The Progressive Conservative Party would ultimately lose the April elections as a result of General Lauris Norstad’s affirmative reaction and Prime Minister Diefenbaker’s following statements in response.
